AR/VR Development

We are very excited about the educational potential of Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR), and are involved with several projects and prototypes.

Second Life: Virtual World, Real Learning

Forrester Research interviewed more than a dozen companies -- including IBM, SAP, and Sun Microsystems -- to compile its report Getting Real Work Done In Virtual Worlds. The firm concluded that, eventually, the 3D Internet will be as important for work as the Web. The report further admonishes business professionals to experiment with virtual worlds to replicate workspaces, allow people to share 3D objects, and make remote training more realistic. However, the report also notes "You've practically got to be a gamer to use most of these tools."

Since 2006, we have been working and playing in the best-known VR environment, Second Life® (SL™), which boasts somewhere between 600,000 and one million users. We have found it to be a great way to provide training to our clients because of its:

  • Strong vendor support with regular updates.
  • Free user accounts.
  • Global accessibility.
  • Communications resources, including text chat, voice chat, and language translation.
  • Presentation resources, such as in-world video and web content.
  • Robust 3D authoring tools, giving us the ability to mock up real world locations and situations.
  • Real-time instructor and student interactivity.

We have found this environment particularly valuable in the medical, engineering, and health & safety fields.

We offer organizations that wish to engage their workforces through Second Life the following services:

  • Expert consulting on establishing a user-friendly and policy compliant presence in-world.
  • External and in-world training for employees on accessing Second Life and using its resources.
  • Development support to create customized VR role-play experiences.

System Requirements
In addition to the
SL system requirements defined by Linden Lab®, learners must also have:

  • A valid email address.

  • A high-speed Internet connection (Cable or DSL).

  • A sound card and microphone capable of supporting VOIP for discussions.

To participate in our in-world courses, learners must have established
an account in Second Life and have worked through orientation. Our Quick Start Guide and YouTube video will help with that.
Once learners complete orientation, we can provide further training in-world at:
